Frenceay first Sabahan crowned Sukma Sportswoman

KUANTAN: Two weightlifters probably created Sukma history and gave the sport a big lift by crowning themselves as Sportsman and Sportswoman when the 15th Sukma drew down its curtains here yesterday.

Terengganu’s Abdul Mubin Rahim and Sabah’s Frenceay Titus, winners of gold medals in their respective categories, were chosen over a number of multiple gold medal winners in the Games after breaking national records.

Abdul Mubin, 21, who competed in the men’s 77kg weight category cleared 171kg in the Clean & Jerk to erase Mohd Hidayat Hamidon’s 170kg national record that was set in Penang back in 2003.

Frenceay Titus who swept both the 58kg Snatch and Clean & Jerk gold medals in record fashion, cleared 81kg in the Snatch to wipe out the 80kg national record and set a new Games record by lifting 95kg in the Clean & Jerk.

Abdul Mubin said he was overcome by emotion and shock when he was announced as the winner since there were other multiple medal winners.

“I totally did not expect to be crowned as the winner since a shooter had collected multiple gold medals. I guess the national record was the deciding factor,” he told Bernama here.

Abdul Mubin said the title would further inspire him to train harder and achieve better results in the future.

Meanwhile, Frenceay Titus from Kundasang, Sabah was beaming with pride after becoming the first Sabahan to be crowned Sportswoman in the history of Sukma.

“I am on cloud nine now. I hope this title will be the right tonic to propel me for better success, especially in the SEA Games held in Myanmar next year,” said the 21-year-old.

“All my hard work has paid off and I must thank all the people who supported me, especially my parents and coaches.”
