Two nabbed with RM10,000 in stolen sawn wood

KENINGAU: Two men were arrested for stealing sawn wood worth RM10,000 last Sunday at about 3.30pm in Kg Tuarid Taud.

Aged 38 and 24 years, the thieves were brought to the police station with a lorry that was loaded with the stolen wood (kayu beruti).

District police chief, DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong said the sawn wood that had been collected by a villager to build a house in Kg Tuarid Taud was stolen from a fenced area used for storing wood in the same village.

The area was overgrown with weeds and bushes and the nearest house was less than 5 metres away.

β€œThe complainant had been keeping wood in that lot for the last five years. He would buy wood whenever he could and kept them in a fenced area,” said Douglas in a press conference yesterday.

One of the suspects tested positive for syabu after a urine test.

Both men have been placed on remand for investigation under Section 379 of the Penal Code for stealing and can be jailed for up to seven years or fined or both, or whipped if it is a repeated offence, upon conviction in court.

The suspect who tested positive for syabu will be investigated under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a jail term of up to two years and fine of up to RM5,000 if convicted in court. – By Marutin Ansiung.
