The RM15.5 million cinema, equipped with the latest digital sound system, will be complementing the existing GSC 1Borneo with an additional 1,465 seats and eight new screens in the heart of Kota Kinabalu.

GSC Chief Executive Officer, Koh Mei Lee, presided over the launching ceremony of the new multiplex located on the 8th floor of Suria Sabah Shopping Mall yesterday.

“The GSC team is equally excited as they have been working long and hard, together with the developers of Suria Sabah Shopping Mall to open this spanking new cinema, in time for the summer peak period,” she said.

Also present at the ceremony was Mayor Datuk Illyias Ibrahim, Sabah Tourism Board chairman, Dato Seri Tengku Zainal Adlin, Makamewah Sdn Bhd managing director, Humphrey Tan and GSC business partners and associates.

Hall 6, which has a capacity for 195 viewers, including two spots for wheelchair-bound patrons, will be equipped with a 3D digital projector system. Two spaces for wheelchairs have also been equipped in each of the eight halls.

“With this 3D facility, movie goers here can enjoy the latest 3D movies in town, starting with “Shrek Forever After” which opens today (May 20),”

“We are also bringing back James Cameron’s highly successful “Avatar” 3D in conjunction with the launch of this multiplex,” Koh said.

GSC e-payment facility has been extended to GSC Suria Sabah customers while GSC EON Bank Credit Card holders will enjoy discounts up to 10 percent for purchases through the co-branded card.

As part of the opening offer, movie goers will get special giveaways like ‘Buy 1 Free 1’ coupon for the first thousand customers and a ‘Buy 2 Free 1’ voucher for another 1,000 customers.

Complimentary mobile phone LCD screen cleaners will also be given out for every purchase of GSC’s regular and large combo sets with F&N drinks, while stocks last.

Movie characters like Woody (from Toy Story 3), Harry Potter and Robin Hood will also be making rounds in Gaya Street, Centre Point, Foh Sang and Lido to be up close and personal with the public from 1pm to 8pm this weekend. The schedules for the characters appearances are listed in the GSC website.

According to GSC General Manager, Irving Chee, they are planning to open another digital 3D hall in GSC 1Borneo and have placed an order for the projector and the server from the suppliers.

“Ideally, I would like to do it before November but again I can’t guarantee because it’s up to the supplier. There is a backlog of projectors and servers being demanded,” he said.

He also added that prior to the opening, GSC Suria Sabah have been treating the public to free movies which has received a response of 23,000 movie goers over the last five days.
