UMS taekwondo exponents clinch gold at ongoing SUKIPT



KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) clinched the Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning Games (SUKIPT) first gold medal through its taekwondo Poomsae team.

The Games, which is ongoing at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai in Johor saw the trio of Raymond Toh Meng Hui, Ahmady Radi and Lee Kim Qin strike the gold medal after accumulating the most points of 6.98.

They defeated the trio from HELP University, who registered 6.56 points, in the gold medal decider.

Universiti Islam Antarabangsa and Universiti Teknikal Melaka finished as joint bronze medallists.

“This was the first of the 251 gold medals offered in the Games,” said UMS Sports Centre Director Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah yesterday, who added that this time around, teams from Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and Laos are also participating in several events in the Games.

The Games that got underway since Monday sees more than 8,000 athletes, representing 102 higher learning institutions from throughout the country, taking part.

UMS is competing in 10 out of the 25 sporting disciplines competed in the Games, which is scheduled to end on February 5.

They are represented by 38 athletes and seven officials, and will be competing in taekwondo, silat, track and field, karate, beach volleyball, fencing, badminton, pentaque, lawn bowls and tenpin bowling.
