Sabah College ruggers dominate

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah College continued their dominance in the state’s junior rugby scene after winning both the Under-16 categories during the Sabah College Invitational Rugby 7s on Sunday.

The one-day tournament dubbed as the 5th Benjamin Nair Cup was part of Sabah Osca Warriors development programme in collaboration with the Sabah Rugby Union (SRU) played at the Sabah College rugby field in Sembulan.

The hosts took their first victory through their Girls’ Under-16 squad who convincingly defeated SMK Lohan of Ranau, 17-0 in the final match of the category.

Sabah College then added another silverware by winning the Boys’ Under-16 category after defeating SMKA Limauan, 10-0 in the last match of the tournament.

The hosts also appeared in both the Under-14 finals but could not convert their appearances into champions as the boys’ category saw SM La Salle edge Sabah College, 10-7, whereas the Girls’ Under-14 category saw SMK Mat Salleh of Ranau winning the title over Sabah College, 5-0 by a margin of a single run.

For the record, around 18 secondary schools from across the state took part in the tournament which was used as a medium to select back-up players to represent Sabah in future tournaments. – UMESH RAJAN
