Glorious end to Inter-Church Basketball C’ship



KOTA KINABALU: The Roman Catholic A basketball team won the Boy’s Division A in style during the 5th UGKK Inter-Church Basketball Championship which ended on Saturday at the Likas Sports Complex indoor badminton hall.

The tournament’s main title winner finished on top after defeating Anglican A in the final match while Basel Christian Church of Malaysia B settled for third place in the category.

Whereas in the Boy’s Division B saw Glory Christian Centre clinched the title by putting aside Anglican B in the final match while the third place finisher went to Petros City Church.

Lastly, Kota Kinabalu Bread of Life snatched home the Girl’s Division G title after convincingly beating Glory Christian Centre and Basel Christian Church of Malaysia forced to settle for the final podium spot.

There were several novelty awards presented such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) where Roman Catholic A’s Daniel Wong and Lee Ka Lik of Glory Christian Centre received the award for Division A and Division B, respectively.

Kota Kinabalu Bread of Life duo of Lydia Chin and Lau Wei Ying were named the best players for Division G while Kota Kinabalu Bread of Life boys team was given the tournament’s Fair Play Award.

For the record, a total of 18 teams comprising of 14 boys and 4 girls teams took part in the three-day tournament which also saw several exhibition matches between international and local all-star teams.

Organising Chairman, Allan Siow said that four all-star teams went head-to-head during the tournament as exhibition matches for the spectators.

“We would like to thank Taiwan’s Team Homies, Beruang Blazer of Brunei as well as our two local teams, Marlins x I-World and UGBC Retro for participating during the weekend.

“Also congratulations to all the winners of the tournament while not forgetting thank you to the sponsors and parties that supported our annual tournament,” he said.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Frankie Poon Ming Fung who graced the closing ceremony on Saturday, applauded UGBC especially its President, Allen Chung for their efforts in organising basketball tournaments such as this.

“I believe this UGKK Inter-Church Basketball Championship could promote a healthy lifestyle especially for the younger generation, by shaping their character, attitude and make them useful to society.

“Youngsters or youths should be more involved in sport activities to balance a hectic gadget lifestyle nowadays whereas encouraging participation in sport events like this can generate many benefits, making a positive impact on individuals and communities here,” he said during his speech.

Also present at the ceremony were Sabah Sports Board Chairman, Datuk Louis Rampas; Sabah Sports Board General Manager, Datuk Penyuki Matta; Sabah Basketball Association President, Phan Chee Yong and other officials.
