TAWAU: The Energy Commission has seized more than 10 units of electrical items worth over RM6,000 which did not have any SIRIM label on them from an electrical appliances store, here yesterday.

Its regional director, Mohd Yusrul Mohd Yusof said that among the items seized from the store at Mile 3 were an air conditioner, vacuum cleaner, microwave over and toaster.

“The seized items did not carry any SIRIM label which is an offence and this can endanger the lives of consumers,” he said.

According to him, the operation which began at 10 am was to weed out unscrupulous retailers who are flouting the law.

He said that all electrical appliances for sale must be certified by SIRIM to prove its worthiness.

“We are satisfied that most retailers abide by the law during our spontaneous checks,” he said when leading the nine-man operation, which included personnel from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumerism (KPDNKK) and SIRIM.

Mohd Yusrul said importers must obtain the necessary approval from Customs Department, KPDNKK and SIRIM, to bring in the electrical items to ensure that the items meet safety standards before they are allowed to be sold.

He said that they would continue to monitor the situation and to conduct checks from time to time. Under the regulations, an offender can be fined up to RM5,000, or a jail term of up to a year, or both.
