TWO HELD IN DRUG BUST |
KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested two people in connection with the seizure of one kilogramme of cannabis. A narcotics team from the Karamunsing police headquarters caught the two, in their 40s and 50s, along the Jalan Sulaman bypass at about 12.10pm on Tuesday. On receiving a public tip-off the police team rushed to the area and spotted the duo behaving in a suspicious manner as they walked towards Taman Indah Permai, Menggatal. “And, as they attempted to flee when my men approached them, the woman snatched a plastic bag from the man and threw it into a nearby bush,” City police chief ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria (pictured) told reporters here yesterday. They were detained after a brief scuffle with members of the police team. “My men then retrieved the plastic bag which contained the cannabis,” he added. Initial investigation showed that the two suspects were related to each other. The cannabis is said to be worth some RM10,000. To a question, Ahmad Sofi said police were now in the midst of establishing whether the duo were members of a drug syndicate or were delivering the cannabis for someone. The cannabis, he said, was smuggled in from a neigbouring country. Meanwhile, Ahmad Sofi said the two were being detained to facilitate further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence in the event of conviction. “This is the fifth drug case probed under Section 39B so far this year,” he said. |
