KOTA KINABALU: The top seven winners of the state-level 2013 Unduk Ngadau pageant will walk away with prizes worth a total of USD40,000 or more than RM120,000 from Star Cruises.

The prize money for the top winner this year has also been increased from RM4,000 to RM6,000. First and second runners-up win RM4,000 and RM3,000 respectively.

Registration for the pageant will open on 27 May at the Le Meridien Hotel Here starting at 8am.

Chairperson of the state-level Unduk Ngadau committee, Joanna Kitingan said there will be a ‘Sodop Pintutunan’ during which the participants will make their introduction on 27 May at 7pm.

There will also be a presentation of sash to each participant on that night from the wife of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) president, Puan Sri Genevieve Kitingan.

A programme at the Sabah Museum is slated the following day to brief them on culture-based tourism.

“It is important for them to learn that Unduk Ngadau is not merely a representation of the legend Huminodun but that each on them is representing their district,” said Joanna at a press conference held at the Le Meridien Hotel on Monday night.

As an Unduk Ngadau, the title bearer becomes an ambassadress of cultural tourism for the state.

“That is why they must have knowledge on the history and culture of Sabah. They will also have a study visit to the Museum Gallery and Heritage Village of the Sabah Museum,” she added.

The organising committee has also invited a motivational speaker to inspire the participants who are young women and mostly students of higher institutions of learning.

They will also make a charity visit to Care Haven, a home for the underprivileged.

Five days before the finals on 31 May, contestants will be judged based on demeanour, personality and congeniality to pick the winners for Tati Topiodo (Miss Natural Beauty) and Tati Tosuau (Miss Friendly).

Prizes for Tati Topiodo and Tati Tosuau are sponsored by Diamoney. Digi will sponsor the winner of the Unduk Ngadau Popular Kaamatan who will be voted by SMS.

Sodop Unduk Ngadau, a gala dinner event, will be held on 29 May and tickets priced at RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000 per table are now on sale.

Further details of the Sodop Unduk Ngadau can be obtained from Teresa Molidu (013-868 6003), Philomena Engsun (019-862 4803) or the KDCA office in Penampang at 088-720337.
