Sabah’s films have international market potential

22nd August, 2012

KOTA KINABALU: The film and documentary industry in Sabah has the potential to be developed and marketed internationally, said Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Md Afendi Hamdan.

Citing the film, ‘Gerimis Mengundang’, shot at various locations in Sabah and which managed to penetrate the Indonesian market, he said the state, dubbed ‘Land below the Wind’, had a rich natural environment and favorable filming locations.

He said a United States company was currently shooting a documentary in Mount Kinabalu.

“The only setback for Sabah in the industry is that it does not have sufficient equipment or facilities,” he told reporters at his open house here yesterday.

Md Afendi has proposed to Finas board members to help develop the industry in Sabah, by making it easier for local producers to acquire the relevant facilities. He said Finas was also planning to provide various acting and filming courses in the state.

Meanwhile, in KUANTAN, the Cultural Arts Guidance Programme, which has been introduced in 50 schools, will incorporate cultural arts from Sabah and Sarawak.

Pahang Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) director Mohd Sukarno Abdul Wahab said, the programme, aimed at highlighting the various arts, would also be involved in teaching Chinese and Indian arts.

The programme, involving 25 primary and 25 secondary schools, including Chinese and Tamil national-type schools in the state, would encourage dance, music, theatre, traditional games and art by introducing them to students, he told Bernama.

He said students undergoing the six-month programme since March, were guided by trained instructors, with modules designed by culture and arts experts.

It was hoped the 16-hour weekly guidance by instructors would spark an interest in appreciating cultural arts among the younger generation, apart from unearthing new talents for the international arena, added Mohd Sukarno.

He said Pahang JKKN had also appointed qualified instructors under the Local Cultural Arts Guidance programme to assist 10 local communities in arts and culture.

Communities interested in participating in the arts and culture fields can apply to Pahang JKKN to obtain the assistance of instructors.
