TAWAU: A teenage boy watched in horror as a crocodile attacked and dragged his father into the Udin river.
Azwan Jailani, 16, related that his father Jailani, 54, was catching prawns in the river when the croc attack took place at about 4.30pm on Wednesday.
“I was fishing by the riverbank when I saw the crocodile suddenly emerging from nowhere and dragged my father into the river. Both my father and the crocodie disappeared in a twinkle of an eye.
“I am not sure I will be able to celebrate Hari Raya without him this year,” he said as his voice became a whisper and his eyes moistened.
The Udin river is located some 50 kilometres from Tawau town.
District police chief ACP Ibrahim Chin who confirmed the croc attack said a search and rescue operation has been launched.
He said personnel from the fire and rescue station and Rela as well as villagers were joining in the operation to locate Jailani.
Ibrahim said crocodile attacks were not uncommon in the Kalumpang, Serudong and Udin rivers.
“As such I wish to advise the people to exercise extra caution when they go to these rivers,” he said.
