KENINGAU: A Form Two student of Sekolah Menengah (SM) Ken Hwa drowned in the swimming pool of the Sports Complex here on Saturday.
The victim was identified as Kenny Yap Shian Fong, 14, who was believed to have died at about 2.50pm.
District police chief, DSP Zahari Mohamed (pictured) confirmed the incident and said that an assistant administrator of the complex, Muin Sabibin, 47, reported that he was informed at 5.10pm about someone having drowned in the pool.
“There is no criminal element in connection with the incident,” said Zahari when contacted on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a young man received seven stitches on his forehead while his cousin sustained bruising on the body after they were both attacked by a group of seven unidentified men near Kampung Kadalakan near here at about 8pm last Monday.
Zahari said the assailants used heavy objects on the two victims apart from punching and kicking them.
An argument occurred when the suspects tried to stop the cousins as they were riding a motorcycle earlier that day.
Later that night, the attackers, some of whom were drunk, suddenly went after the victims.
Police arrested four of the assailants the following day for further investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for possession weapons at a riot.
The punishment upon conviction in court for the offence carries imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or fine or both.
