KENINGAU: Two female toddlers were drowned after falling into the Pegalan River while playing along the riverbank on Tuesday.
The girls who are about three are identified as Norhayati Aji Khan and Siti Norsyafikah Julman from Kampung Lingkudau.
They were said to be playing near the riverbank at about 4pm with some children when the older kids realized they have fallen into the river.
The kids ran to call for help and a search was carried out with the body of the first girl found on the riverbed.
Keningau fire and rescue Chief Janil Jaya said by the time the rescuers reached the scene, the villagers found the body of the second toddler.
He advised villagers especially those residing near the riverbank to be extra cautious with the whereabouts of their children during playtime.
“The young children must be accompanied by adults to ensure that no danger befalls on them,” he said.
