KOTA KINABALU: A local man was sentenced to a total of 43 years imprisonment plus six strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court for three counts of robbery.
Judge Caroline Bee Majanil handed down the sentence on Syazwi Azreen Jusoh, 24, after he pleaded guilty to all charges.
However, Syazwi will only serve 16 years imprisonment and six strokes of cane after the court ordered the jail term to run concurrently.
A foreigner, Mohd Irwan Tandi @ Arwan, 26, who was jointly charged with Syazwi on the third charge, was also sentenced to 16 years imprisonment and three strokes of the cane.
He was also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after completing his jail term.
On the first charge, the court jailed Syazwi 13 years plus two strokes of the cane for robbing a 37-year-old woman of her hand bag containing personal documents, ATM Cards, RM300, gold bracelet and handphone.
Syazwi and another still at large also took the victim’s car and car keys on Jan 23, at 12 noon at a Palm Beach Villa in Kinarut.
The offence framed under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code provides imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction.
Syazwi received another 14 years jail and two strokes of the cane for robbing a 55-year-old woman and injuring her.
The charge stated that Syazwi with two others still at large had robbed the woman of RM2, 000 and car using an iron rod on Feb 12 at 12 noon at a retail Shop in Taman BTC, Kolombong, Inanam.
He had committed an offence under Section 394 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum 20 years’ jail and a possible fine or whipping.
For the third charge, Syazwi and Mohd Irwan with another still at large robbed a 38-year-old woman of her car, RM500, and two handphones while armed with a machete.
The offence took place on March 27, at about 6.15am at the roadside in front of a school in Putatan.
The offence also framed under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code and read with Section 34 of the same Code.
