5,000 packets of contraband cigs seized

LAHAD DATU: Marine police have foiled a bid to smuggle in 5,000 packets of cigarettes following the arrest of three men.

The “paperless” trio, aged between 20 and 28 were picked up during Ops Landai near the Pantai Tungku waters at about 1.30am yesterday.

Apart from the cigarettes they also seized a boat and its 40hp outboard engine. All in all the seized items were valued at RM87,000.

District police chief Supt Shamsudin Mat said a five-men marine police team on patrol stopped the boat And upon inspection found the contraband cigarettes of various brands on board.

He said the cigarettes were meant to be distributed in the local market.

“The three suspects did not possess any document,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Meanwhile Shamsudin said the seized cigarettes would be handed over the customs department for further action.

Also present was district marine police commanding officer ASP Rusdin Banin.
