Almost RM11 mil lost due to electricity theft – SESB

18th July, 2012

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) estimates their loss of electricity sales at nearly RM11 million due to electricity theft.

This total amount recorded since 2008 involves some 1,804 registered consumers in Sabah and Federal Territory of Labuan.

In a statement released here yesterday, SESB Managing Director, Ir. Sallim Hj Abd Razak said so far, SESB have won all their 15 cases involving claims for losses (electricity theft) totaling more than RM250, 000 that were brought to court since 2006.

Meanwhile, the statement disclosed, a number of joint operations are being planned together with the Energy Commission, the Police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in their endeavour to curb this illegal activity.

Under Section 37(3) the Electricity Supply Act 1990, any person convicted of carrying out illegal activities using electricity or tampering with an SESB meter is liable to a fine not exceeding RM100, 000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years or both.

The public who have information regarding electricity theft, including tampering of electricity meter are encouraged to immediately notify the nearest SESB office.

Consumers can also call toll-free directly to SESB at 1-800-88-1135 or 088-282455 to make a report.
