M’sia up against arch rivals Indonesia and S’pore

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champion Malaysia have been drawn together with runner-up Indonesia and three times former champions Singapore in Group B in the AFF Cup.

Another Group B team will be decided after the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers from Oct 5 to 13 hosted by Myanmar, featuring Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Timor Leste and the host.

In the draw held in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday three times former champion Thailand who will jointly host the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup with Malaysia, were paired with 2008 champion Vietnam, the Philippines and another team from the qualifying round.

During the 2010 edition, Malaysia beat Indonesia 4-2 on aggregate in matches played at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here and the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Group A matches will be played at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand while Group B matches will be played at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from Nov 24 to Dec 22.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals and play on a home and away format from 8-13 while the final is scheduled for Dec 19-22.

Malaysia open their title defence against Singapore on Nov 25 and face a qualifier on Nov 27 before the crunch match against Indonesia on Nov 1.

The champion receives US$200,000 (RM636,692) and the runner-up’s purse is US$75,000 (RM238,676).
