SANDAKAN: Police believe they have solved three recent armed robberies at the 99 Convenience Store with the arrest of a member of the security forces and two teenagers.

The trio, aged between 18 and 26, and from the same village in Johor, were picked up during a raid on their rented apartment at Villa Permai in Sibuga at about 1.30am on July 1.

Sandakan police chief ACP Rowell Marong told a press conference yesterday that a police team from the Criminal Investigation Department as well as the Bandar Kim Fung and Sibuga police posts conducted the raid after receiving a public tip-off.

The three suspects were believed to have robbed the convenience store outlets in Bandar Utama and Bandar Indah in the early hours of June 23, 24 and 27.

They also broke into a mobile phone shop in Bandar Tyng between 1pm on June 2 and 8.30am on June 3.

Losses were estimated at RM 15,000.

“We are investigating to determine if the suspects are responsible for other cases in Sandakan and neighbouring districts,” Rowell said, adding that they were also checking the background of the two unemployed teenagers.

He added that the raiding police team also recovered 68 items from the suspects’ apartment including machetes, gloves, screwdrivers, paper cutter, metal cutter, two identity cards, four watches, several bottles of liquor, pendrives, baseball caps, waist pouch, sling bag, RM10 worth of coins, seven mobile phones and a notebook, among others.

The cases, he added, were being probed under Sections 457 and 395/ 397 of the Penal Code.

“We mounted a special operation to look for the suspects after the incidents were reported to us and we succeeded in catching them within two weeks,” he said.

Rowell meanwhile said the three suspects were being remanded for seven days to facilitate investigation.

And, he thanked the public for their cooperation which led to the arrest of the three suspects and urged anyone with information on crime here to immediately report to the district police.

Also present during the press conference at the district police headquarters were deputy OCPD Supt Fadzil Mohd Ali and senior investigation officer ASP Sharanjeit Singh.
