KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,983 public officers were investigated for corruption between 2005 and 2011, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said 816 of the officers were charged in court, convicted (324), discharged not amounting to acquittal (69) and found not guilty (298).
Twenty cases were withdrawn, while 105 other cases were still going through trial or appeal process, he said in reply to Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) during question time at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here yesterday.
When replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohamad Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) on whether the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) would probe into the allegation that Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim controlled over 20 accounts worth RM3 billion, Liew said the MACC would investigate every corruption-related case without bias or favouritism.
“If necessary, they will even file charges, but they have to have enough evidence so no time will be wasted. The MACC can carry out the investigation if there is a report lodged on the matter, sufficient evidence and relevant issues.
“In a case concerning a public officer, sometimes it just involves a violation of regulations and the officer should only be punished with disciplinary action. Everybody should understand that MACC must have strong evidence to bring to court,” he said.
