FOREIGN WORKERS MUST BE INSURED STARTING JULY 1

29th June, 2012

KOTA KINABALU: The Foreign Workers Health Insurance Protection Scheme (SPIKPA) will be enforced in Sabah effective July 1.

State assistant health director (management) Ketirah Hank said the implementation of the SPIKPA was already approved by the state government and the Immigration Department.

Ketirah said the scheme that was implemented in the peninsula since January 1, required all foreign workers, except maids, to be insured.

“The obligation of purchasing the insurance depends on the employers of the foreign workers,” said Katirah in a statement here yesterday.

Foreign workers who are not insured would not be allowed to apply or renew their work permit, including temporary work permit holders.

The Health Ministry hoped that the implementation of SPIKPA would realise the government’s aspiration to enhance the standard of health of foreign workers in the country.

Ketirah also said 26 insurance companies have registered with the Health Ministry to offer their services.

Among the registered insurance companies are Allianz General Insurance Bhd, AXA Affin Insurance Bhd, Berjaya Sompo Insurance Bhd, ACE Jerneh Insurance Bhd, Kurnia Insurans (Malaysia) Bhd, Lonpac Insurance Bhd, Zurich Insurance Malaysia Bhd, MUI Continental Insurance Bhd, Oriental Capital Assurance Bhd, Progressive Insurance Bhd, QBE Insurance (M) Bhd, RHB Insurance Bhd, Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd, Overseas Assurance Corporation (M) Bhd, Takaful Ikhlas Sdn Bhd, The Pacific Insurance Bhd, Tokio Marine Insurance (M) Bhd, Etiqa Insurance Bhd, Etiqa Takaful Bhd, Uni Asia General Insurance Bhd, Multi-Purpose Insurance Bhd, ING Insurance Bhd, AmG Insurance, MAA Takaful Bhd, MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd and Hong Leong MSIG Takaful Bhd.
