KOTA KINABALU: Response from both amateur and hardcore off-road enthusiasts from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei looks encouraging as entry forms for the upcoming Sandakan Fest 4×4 Off-Road Challenge is drawing nearer (June 29-July 1), are being briskly distributed.

Organised by the Sandakan Municipal Council or MPS to coincide with the Annual Sandakan Fest, the three- category event (Car Show, Amateur and Hardcore off-road challenges), are being handled by the Sabah Off-Road Adventure Association (SOAA) under the leadership of Hiew Min Kiyun.

Yesterday, MPS President Datuk James Wong said, they have already received numerous enquiries from various Districts throughout the State, including Beaufort, Tenom, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Tawau, Kota Belud, Keningau, Brunei and Sarawak, and a majority of them have received their entry forms.

James called on all interested parties or teams to confirm and return their entry forms as soon as possible to avoid last minute rush because they have decided that registrations for all the categories will be a first come first serve basis.

For those who require further information and to get their entry forms, they can contact the Event Secretariat at Wisma Perbandaran, Third Floor or go to its website: www.mps.sabah.gov.my or contact Miss Ku Siu Weng or Azmawati Noorzain at 089-226454 or 089-275400.

The forms are also available from Hiew Min Kiyun (016-8300283) and several of his committee members.

“I am very pleased with the response as to date from enthusiasts while at the same time overwhelmed with the support from numerous generous sponsors contributing towards the event both in cash and products,” he said.

“I also wish to thank the gesture accorded by the land owner, Tan Sri Andrew Liew, who has willingly allowed his piece of land at Mile 5, Northern Road to be used as the competition venue.”

Hefty cash prizes worth RM32,000, trophies and goodies from sponsorships await the top three winners from each category namely, Car Show (RM5,000, RM3,000, RM2,000), Amateur challenge (RM3,000, RM2,000, RM1,000) and Hardcore challenge (RM8,000, RM5,000, RM3,000).

Judging for the Car Show will be based on several criteria, such as the displayed vehicles must have all-round readiness to take the punishment of off-roading in adventure outings, with properly designed body lifts, modifications, engines, suspensions, undercarriages, paint works (interior and exterior) and all the numerous gadgets, as well their overall accessories and specifications.

“For the Amateur off-road challenge, we have seen the track and identified certain tough but safety tracks for mini hardcore sectors for amateurs or newcomers to learn all the fundamental safe handling of their vehicles with off-roading techniques,” he said.

“Safety is our main priority, thus we are making the special stages challenging enough with all-round safety aspects, where drivers and their co-drivers must possess good teamwork, cooperation, self-recovery skills, good driving skills over obstacles, winching techniques and course management.

“It is advisable for their vehicles to be fitted with snorkels, winches and proper off-road tyres including the extreme Centipede tyres, as the Amateur challenge is more for raw competitors to learn safety and off-road driving skills.”

The amateur challenge will only be opened to those who have never competed in any hardcore events and it will be held over one day on June 29, commencing at 9am until 5pm.

The Car Show and hardcore events will be held the next two days (June 30-July 1), which will be a static carnival-like affair to attract spectators.

The entry fees for the event are as follows – Car Show – RM500 per vehicle, Amateur Challenge – RM350 per team and RM700 per team for Hardcore Challenge.
