PUTATAN: Parents are the front-liners in educating their children on the dangers of drug abuse, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin said.
He said they should be role models to the children, who would look up to them.
“Responsible parents will tell their kids that any form of drug abuse will only bring them down. But if parents fail to educate their children, the possibility that their kids may be influenced by friends and peers to indulge in drugs is great,” he said.
He said early education and strong guidance for children are imperative in modern living.
Yahya said that with so many types of influences the society has experienced, a child who does not have strong values in him or her would easily fall into the trappings of drug abuse.
Speaking at a programme on students free from drugs at SMK Putatan here yesterday, Yahya who is also the Agriculture and Food Industry Minister said that good upbringing of a child would thwart any threats which the child would face in future.
“They will not sway and will hold to the values that have been imbued into them by their parents,” he added.
The programme atterded by some 300 students was organized by Pemadam Putatan branch.
Present was the branch chairman Awang Abd. Ghani Pg. Yusuff, State Pemadam executive secretary Jossie Ansilmus, SMK Putatan PTA chairman Hussin Khalid and parents.
Yahya said that there have been too many youngsters destroying their future due to drug addiction.
“Students must hate drugs. Drugs destroy your future and kill you,” he stressed.
