KOTA KINABALU: Barbero of LT Stable did not disappoint its supporters on Tuesday when it galloped to the finishing line to win the Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) Merdeka Cup 2010 at Tambalang Race Course here on Tuesday.

It was a smooth race for Barbero, which was earlier identified as one of the ponies to watch in the Class 3 Division 2 1,800m race, as no other ponies could get near to it.

In second place was Myth Territory of Myth Stable, followed by Yang Tinggi (Garden Stable), and Royal Chip (LoTet Phin Stable). The champion for the Merdeka Cup 2010 received RM4,000 while the second placed got RM2,000 and RM1,000 for third placing.

RSTC Chairman Datuk Golkhan Hasbullah presented the prizes.

In another Cup Race for Class 7 Division 2 earlier, favourite, Pop Rock of HKS Stable won in style leaving behind Great Success, Second Chance and Lagi Lagi II over 1,800m.

Meanwhile, punters and pony racing enthusiasts were given a different, much-improved viewing experience as they watched the race on the LCD screen from various angles and not just from the front view like before.

This was made possible by the installation of the new high definition (HD) cameras surrounding the race track, as part of the improvements being taken by the present RSTC management committee in further boosting the facilities and standard of horse/pony racing in Tambalang.

Patrons on Tuesday were also entertained by the SJK (C) Chung Hwa Tamparuli brass band as well as 13 Bajau horsemen who accompanied the ponies to the parade ground before each race.
