KOTA KINABALU: It was a packed hall at the Likas Sports Complex when thousands turned up to celebrate the 53rd National Day on Tuesday.

Due to the Ramadan month, the occasion was held indoors on a smaller scale but the spirit of Merdeka was clearly evident with many proudly displaying the Jalur Gemilang.

Head of State Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah and his wife Toh Puan Hajah Dayang Masuyah Awang Japar arrived at 7.30am.

They were received by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman and his wife Datin Seri Hajah Faridah Tussin together with Deputy Chief Minister and the chairman of the National Day 2010 celebration organising committee, Datuk Yahya Hussin.

Also present were State Assembly Speaker Datuk Haji Juhar Mahiruddin and wife Datin Hajah Nurlidah Datuk R. M. Jasni, state cabinet ministers, state and federal secretaries, Mayor Datuk Illyias Ibrahim and Brigadier-General Haji Sahbani Ali of the 5th Brigade Infantry.

After inspecting the guard of honour outside the hall, Ahmadshah proceeded inside where 83 contingents, led by Major Mohd Zafferi Shairi of the 5th Brigade Formation, paraded before the crowd.

The contingents included the Royal Malaysian Navy, Royal Malaysian Police, the Fire and Rescue Department, various ministries and government departments, schools, uniform bodies and private companies.

Captain Mohd Abid Mohd Ariffin of the Armed Forces led 1st Warrant Officer Abu Hassab Ali from the Royal Malaysian Navy, Chief Inspector Mohd Abuzar Ali of the Royal Malaysian Police, Senior Superintendent John Rodsung of the Fire and Rescue Department, Private Affizan bin Wine of the Civil Defence Department, Lonnie Beting of City Hall and Norazmi Thomasbaren of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in an oath swearing ceremony where they recited the Rukun Negara.

Performances during the celebration were from the choir of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries and the Sabah Cultural Board.

Dulamid Rudyn, an educator from SMK Taun Gusi Kota Belud, who was the national champion during the 2006 National Day Poetry Recital competition under the guidance of Nadim Salleh from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), recited a National day themed poetry to conclude the celebration.
