Nine year old dies in road crossing accident

2nd September, 2010

KENINGAU: A nine-year old pedestrian was killed when she was hit by a lorry while crossing the road at KM10, Jalan Keningau–Apin-Apin on Tuesday.

Alprida Pluter was confirmed dead at the district hospital here due to severe head injuries. She and her three siblings aged 13, 7 and three years old were returning home at about 10am from a sundry shop by the roadside near the scene of the accident. Their house is at a vegetable farm where her parents work, about a kilometre away and not far from Kg Awas-Awas.

District police chief, DSP Zahari Mohamad said the victim had run ahead of the others and when crossing the road had only turned to look towards the direction of Jalan Tambunan and so failed to see the three-tonne lorry coming from Keningau. Her siblings screamed and shouted to warn her but it was too late.

The 44 year-old driver of the lorry and the 24-year-old passenger were heading to Tambunan to send food supplies. They were unhurt.

Zahari said Alprida was flung onto the road shoulder. Her parents found out about the accident when their other children rushed to inform them.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act.
