KOTA KINABALU: The development of PortCity@POIC, a commercial cum industrial cluster, will complement the plans of the Lahad Datu palm oil industrial cluster, POIC Lahad Datu, to become a major catalyst in the development of Sabah’s east coast.
The project, undertaken by Sabah-based BriSteel Properties Sdn Bhd, will eventually have 193 units of shops and industrial buildings featuring common close-circuit TV surveillance systems, and it will be developed in phases over three to four years.
Chief Executive Officer of POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, the developer of POIC Lahad Datu, Dr Pang Teck Wai said 36 units of shops or offices and 17 light industrial warehouses were unveiled to potential buyers at the soft launch of Port City@POIC in Lahad Datu, yesterday.
He commended the Lahad Datu local authorities for their efficiency in expediently approving BriSteel’s development application.
BriSteel Properties signed a purchase agreement last June for 9.85 acres on which to develop the initial phase of PortCity@POIC. It has also signed an option to purchase another 30 acres for future phases.
“We are appreciative that the Lahad Datu authorities and their officials share our vision of how POIC Lahad Datu will have a key role in catapulting Lahad Datu into a major city in Sabah in the next 10 to 20 years.
“We have been receiving excellent cooperation from them since we started in 2005,” he said in a message for the occasion.
POIC Lahad Datu is government-owned, and it has so far developed 1,150 acres in its first two phases. A third phase comprising about 3,000 acres is in different stages of implementation.
Pang said 30 companies had purchased land at POIC Lahad Datu with a combined investment value of more than RM2 billion.
These companies are into palm oil refinery, biodiesel, fertilizer manufacturing, logistics and biomass.
Meanwhile, BriSteel’s spokesman, William Chee said PortCity@POIC’s location at POIC Lahad Datu is strategic for it to capture the growth potential of not only POIC, but also as an extension of the Lahad Datu town.
He said the PortCity’s slogan “Step Out of the Crowd” not only promised investors an option out of the saturating condition in other parts of Lahad Datu, but also modern design and livability.
Among the design features is a food street where shops are designed to cater to the needs of food outlets with purpose-build chimneys and grease traps for ambience and hygiene.
Chee also noted that Lahad Datu is the gateway to world famous tourist destinations like Danum Valley, Meliau Basin.
“We hope that our project will not only support the needs of the anchor industries in POIC, but also provide facilities that will attract tourists to stay longer in Lahad Datu.”
