Opening of new service centre in Elopura an indication of a split within DAP Sandakan?

30th December, 2020

By JAMES LEONG

SANDAKAN: Could it be Monday’s opening of the new DAP Indah Branch Service Centre in Bandar Kim Fung by the party’s State acting chairman Datuk Frankie Poon, an indication of a split within DAP Sandakan?

The move in the opening of the new Indah Branch Service Centre definitely did not augur well for the party’s Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong.

Local Chinese newspapers reported Chong as describing the opening of the new service centre in his Elopura constituency as an overlapping of duties, stirring public confusion and waste of financial resources.

He said he had lodged a complaint with the party’ Central Leadership on the matter, describing it as a hidden agenda by certain party leaders through Amsi Liew to continue sidelining him.

“We have the Sandakan Parliament and Elopura Constituency Service Centres, why need to set up another service centre. DAP members can make use of existing avenues to channel public complaints for further actions,” Chong said.

On Monday, Poon officiated the opening of the new Indah Branch Service Centre in Bandar Kim Fung headed by branch chairman and State deputy organising secretary, Amsi Liew.

Also present was State Treasurer, Jimmy Tsen who represented Member of Parliament, Vivian Wong, Sekong assemblyman Alias Sani, Vivian’s mother, Datin Florence Chong and other local party officials. Elopura Assemblyman, Calvin Chong was absent at the function.

Asked about Chong’s absence, Liew said they had hand delivered the invitation card to Calvin Chong for the opening ceremony to Chong’s office but it was returned by Chong’s aide claiming he was busy with official duties.

“I have also private messaged and sent the invitation again by Whatsapp application to Chong himself but he did not reply to both attempts,” Liew said.

According to Liew, the opening of the Indah Branch Service Centre received the blessing of the party’s leaders and the location was selected due to its proximity to Kim Fung Market where it would be convenient for the people to approach.

“Our sole intention is to provide services to the public and no other hidden agendas as claimed by certain quarters,” Liew said.
