One of the best Tom Yums in Sandakan at Sup & Goreng, Harbour Mall Sandakan

21st December, 2020

By JAMES LEONG

SANDAKAN: Tom Yum lovers will be excited to learn that the new eatery Sup & Goreng in Harbour Mall Sandakan (HMS) serves this popular Thai soup which ranks among the best in Sandakan.

Sup & Goreng opened its doors at the HMS Level Four food court on 1 Dec 2020. It is one of latest addition to the growing numbers of retail outlets and eateries at HMS, the first of its kind modern shopping mall in the east coast of Sabah.

So, give a kick to your tastebuds from the flavourful spices of one of the best Tom Yum in town at Sup & Goreng. New Sabah Times caught up with the “key person” behind the opening of the eatery, William Ng Wai Leong, 43.

With over 10 years of experience in the culinary field, Ng and several close friends got together to discuss about their business plan and the rest is history.

They recruited a cook whose credentials included over seven years of experience working at one of the renowned Indian Muslim restaurants in Sandakan, to ensure diners’ satisfaction at Sup & Goreng.

Apart from Tom Yum, the other item which is much sought after by diners at Sup & Goreng is its Mee Goreng Mamak. For those who are not into Tom Yum, they can try the other varieties on the menu that include Malaysia Pan Mee Ikan Bilis, Bihun Goreng Singapore or Nasi Goreng Pataya.

Tom Yum is a Thai soup famous for its spicy, salty, sour and sweet flavors. It truly represents Thailand’s flavor profile and uses many aromatics like galangal, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves to give it a fresh kick.

“We picked Harbour Mall Sandakan to set up the eatery because HMS today is undeniably the pulse of the city and the place to be in Sandakan. This two elements make it the ideal location and the potentials to start a business and for it to grow,” Ng disclosed to New Sabah Times.

Ng said the biggest challenge upon the opening of the eatery was the adherence to COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures but believed majority of local community has been able to adapt to life under the new norm.

We must be resilience and ready to embrace changes in the changing business environment to survive and flourish in the new norm, Ng said.

“The HMS opening hours during the Conditional Movement Control Order is 10.00 am to 8.00 pm and I am told it will be back to the usual closing time of 10.00 pm very soon,” he added.

Ng suggested for the Harbour Mall Sandakan management to embark on more collaborations with tenants to organize events to attract more people to the mall, when the CMCO is lifted and the COVID-19 curve has been flattened.

“Personally, I will recommend HMS to anyone particularly my friends who wish to start or do their business in Sandakan,” he said.
