KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Amateur Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) has started the ball rolling in their preparations to stage the Mr Malaysia Bodybuilding Championship here in the Land Below The Wind next year.
While most say it is still early days, but SBBA is not about to take things for granted as they bid to make the 42nd edition of the championship one to be remembered for a lifetime.
They may sound a little ambitious, but that is something which is pretty much within their reach.
“This is not the first time we are staging this national level event. We have hosted it a few times, with the latest one being in 2007. So basically, we will learn from our experience and will try to make this one a big success,” said its Deputy President Joannes Staneslous.
This time around, Joannes said they will not only want to make it successful in terms of staging or organising, but also hope to do well in terms of participation.
“We want to do well both in staging and participation, so now we are looking at both aspects of our preparations.
“Although the 41st edition has just ended last week in Penang, but for us, there will be no time wasting and we will start the work from now.
In fact, he said they have conducted the first meeting among themselves, which was aimed at getting opinions, feedback and suggestions from their officials.
“It has been a good meeting, but nothing has been finalised. But the next meeting, then we will make some decisions, including the date of the championship, venue and so on,” said Joannes citing that it is the prerogative of host State to determine the date of the championship.
He did hint that the championship is likely to be held in the first week of July next year while the venue could be at the KDCA Hall in Penampang.
“But there is also suggestion that the prejudging is to be held at a different venue with the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall being mentioned. But at the moment, nothing is being finalised.
At the same time, Joannes also revealed that they are currently working on plans in terms of athletes’ preparations.
“We are currently working on the paperwork, budget and identifying the athletes. Once everything is sorted out, then we will start our training programme.
At the recent Mr Malaysia, Sabah hulksters returned home with one gold medal, one silver and five bronze medals with Mr Sabah 2009 champion of the champions’ winner Mark Allan Mogindol finishing fifth of the eight athletes that SBBA paraded.
Henro Lee won the gold while Yong Chee Ken claimed the silver with five others – Simbun Daud, Jirom Gundalam, Abdul Mat Sali, Robin Stephanus and Geinod Lozitin winning bronze.
