Hulksters on course for gold

HENRO … Sabah’s best bet to win the gold medal at the Mr Malaysia Bodybuilding Championship 2010 in Penang. The final will be held at Hotel Vistana tonight.

18th July, 2010

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah hulksters are on course to achieve their two gold-medal target in the 41st Mr Malaysia Bodybuilding Championship 2010 in Penang.

All the eight Sabah hulksters made it into the finals in their respective categories after the completion of the pre-judging held at the Vistana Hotel yesterday.

Team manager Hamdin Kadir in a telephone interview with the New Sabah Times Sports is quietly confident of winning two gold medals.

“Our chances look pretty good. After the prejudging, I think most of our hulksters are good enough to make a top three finish,” Hamdin said, while pointing out that Henro Lee and Jirom Gundalam are their best bets to win the gold medals.

He said that Henro, 45, is the favourite to take the masters’ category crown.

“He looks outstanding among the five finalists. I’m quite convinced he will do well in his category.

Henro, the winner of the Mr Sabah 2010 welterweight category, has decided to compete in the masters’ category, which is for hulksters aged 45 years old and above.

“During the registration, he told us he wants to compete in the masters category instead of the welterweight, and after a short discussion among team officials, we decided to give him the nod. I think he has made a good decision in competing in the masters, as now he is the favourite for the crown.

On Jirom’s challenge, Hamdin is also optimistic the 1Fitness hulkster will retain his light-flyweight crown.

“Things look pretty close, but I think he will make it. If not then the very least he could do is a top three finish,” said Hamdin.

Sabah’s flyweight contender Abdul Mat Sali is also in the fight for the crown and so is Mr Sabah 2010 champion of the champions’ winner Yong Chee Ken, who is tipped to give his challengers a run for their money in the middleweight category.

“The worst I can expect from him is third place, but based on the pre judging, he is good for the top two placing,” said Hamdin.

Mark Allan Mogindol is also looking good to end his challenge among the top three while Sabah’s heavyweight hulkster Geinod Lozitin is in the same scenario as Mark.

Surprisingly, Hamdin said Robin Stephanus, who was only roped into the squad as a replacement for Yampil Garai, who decided to represent Labuan, is among the title contenders in the bantamweight category.

At the recent Mr Sabah Yampil lifted the crown leaving Robin in second. But yesterday, Robin did one better than Yampil, as the latter failed to make the top five finalists while Robin will be in action in the finals to be held tonight at the same venue.

“I’m delighted to see him doing so well. I hope he will get the best possible placing, and I think a top three finish is definitely within his reach,” said Hamdin.

Simbun Daud also made it into the finals in the masters’ category.
