Yong to spearhead State’s Mr Malaysia challenge

13th July, 2010

KOTA KINABALU: Mr Sabah 2010 champion of the champions’ winner Yong Chee Ken will spearhead Sabah’s challenge at the Mr Malaysia Bodybuilding Championship to be held in Penang this weekend.

Yong, 28, who won the champion of the champions’ title for the fourth time in five years on Saturday, is among the eight hulksters that have been named by the Sabah Amateur Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) for the national level championship.

In announcing the list of the selected hulksters yesterday, team manager Hamdin Kadir said that these hulksters were selected based on their performances at the Mr Sabah.

Unfortunately, he added that they are unable to parade a full squad for the annual event under the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation (MBBF) calendar after four hulksters declined to don State colours.

“Initially SBBA had wanted to parade a full squad for the open weight category, but unfortunately some of the hulksters turned down the offer of donning Sabah colours.

Instead, Hamdin said the selected foursome namely Mohd Asyraf Akhmal, Kasmin Tiongsoh, Yampil Garai and Hajimin Wasili have opted to represent Labuan.

Both Yampil and Kasmin emerged victorious in their respective categories at the just concluded Mr Sabah 2010.

Yampil won the bantamweight category and also walked home with the Most Improved Bodybuilder Award while Kasmin won the lightweight crown and also bagged the Best Poser Award.

Both Asyraf and Hajimin finished second in the light-heavyweight and lightweight categories respectively.

Hamdin said that they have decided to bring in replacements for the foursome, but only managed to get one.

Robin Stephanus from Papar, who finished second behind Yampil in the bantamweight category, is getting the nod to be part of the State squad.

The rest of the selected hulksters are the winner of the master category Simbun Daud, Jirom Gundalam (light-flyweight winner), Abdul Mat Sali (flyweight winner), Henro Lee (welterweight winner), Mark Allan Mogindol (light-middleweight winner) and Geinod Lozitin (light-heavyweight winner).

Hamdin said the selected hulksters will undergo centralised training before heading for Penang on July 15. The championship will be held on July 16 and 17.

Yesterday, Hamdin presented a sponsorship of 80 egg trays to the selected hulksters.

The eggs were contributed by the association.
