KOTA KINABALU: Student Marie Bibiana Baxter, the 20-year-old lass from Kota Kinabalu was crowned as the winner of the Sabah Model Search 2010 on Saturday.
The interior design student and part-time model also won two subsidiary titles as Little Italy Model of Choice and Snips Ambassador.
“I never expected to win this competition because the others are very good,” she said after being crowned by the Malaysia Model of the World 2009/10, Madelyne Nandu.
Rachel Bridger, 22, from Tawau was the first runner-up while Julylen Liew, 20, from Kota Kinabalu was second runner-up.
Rachel also won the subsidiary titles of Best Catwalk and Body Beautiful while Julylen was named Most Photogenic.
The winners were chosen after three rounds at the catwalk in casual wear, swimwear and evening gown.
After the top six were announced, they each had to answer a question that was randomly picked by the contestants.
Judges for the night was Daphne Iking, Harith Iskander, Hans Isaac, Sabah’s very own upcoming top model in Malaysia, Shirley Chong and Enawati Emran from Tourism Malaysia.
Deputy chairman of Sabah Tourism Board, Datuk Sari Suhut also attended the event at the Magellan Sutera ballroom.
“I think the event was very much a success and I think the winner really deserved the crown,” event organiser and Foxy Production chief executive officer, Cassandra Patrick, said.
She said that all 11 finalists improved since she first met them as some had not had any prior experience in modelling competitions.
“But now they can actually do their own makeup, pose without much direction and a lot of other things that I’m very proud of. Experience definitely plays a part but it doesn’t make you a winner. It’s just an advantage really,” she said.
All three winners will represent Sabah in the Malaysia Model of the World National Finals at Ipoh, Perak in mid-September. Madelyne Nandu from Sabah won the title last year.
“This year, I really hope they can bring the crown back,” Cassandra said.
The winners each received a crown, trophy, sash, cash, a one-year modeling contract with Foxy Production and a professional modelling portfolio with other products and services.
Marie and Rachel will also receive personal grooming from Cassandra who was the first runner-up for Miss Malaysia Universe 2009 and is a professional model.
Tomei Jewellery, who was one of the sponsors, also gave Marie a set of white gold diamonds and a one-year nationwide print advertisement contract.
Sabah Model Search 2010 was sponsored by Sound Tech Production, Imperial International Hotel, Snips, MASwings, Tomei Gold & Jewellery, Sportsmart ARENA, Heatwave, Olumis Borneo Batik House, Olumis Fashion & Art Academy, Metrojaya, Suria Sabah, Little Italy, Memories Bridal Gallery, Richa Studio, 088iFM, Sabah VFM and Breeze magazine.
