KOTA KINABALU: SMK Likas boys’ team clinched the Kota Kinabalu District Schools Sports Council Under-18 Hockey Championship title for a record seventh consecutive time yesterday.

Despite parading a much younger side where a majority of their players are Form One and Two students, it did not stop them from concluding their campaign on a high albeit that the final clash was decided by penalty flick.

In the penalty flick, SMK Likas edged Sabah College 2-1 after the 0-0 stalemate in regulation time. Both teams also failed to get the better of each other in extra time.

And SMK Likas coach Dedi Saputra must be thanking his luck for the victory.

SMK Likas dominated the game throughout forcing their opponents to sweat it out by defending their own half.

They (SMK Likas) had at least three attempts cleared off the line by the Sabah College players, who were glaringly deploying defensive tactics.

Sabah College tactics seemed to work out, as they managed to hold their opponents at the end of regulation time as well as the extra time.

But lady luck proved to be smiling on SMK Likas as they deservedly walked home with the crown.

SMK Teknik Likas claimed the third spot.

Dedi when met later, said that the victory gave him the satisfaction.

“Physically, we are smaller than them, but I’m proud to see that my young charges were able or rather brave enough to take on their opponent,” said Dedi, who pointed out that 12 Form One and Form Two students were in his squad of 18 players.

One Form Six student, two Form Four students and another two Form Three students completed his squad.

Earlier, in the girls’ final, it was also decided by penalty flick that saw Sabah College girls defeat SM All Saints 1-0.

Nur Aqilah Binti Alias converted the winning flick for Sabah College.

SMK Lok Yuk finished third.

In the Under-12 categories, SK Darau took the boys’ title while SRK Lok Yuk finished second followed by SK Kepayan in third.

SRK Lok Yuk won the girls’ crown leaving SK Kepayan in second while SK Darau girls’ finished third.

For the record, the Under-18 category, for both boys and girls was played on a double knockout system while the primary school category was decided by one-group round robin league format,

A total of 15 secondary schools took part in the championship hosted by SMK Kolombong while the primary schools category was participated by eight schools.

The participating schools (secondary) were SMK Likas, Sabah College, SMK Inanam, SMK Sanzac, SMK Agama KK, SM All Saints, SMK Lok Yuk, SM Teknik Likas, SMK Tebobon, SM St Francis Convent, Kota Kinabalu High School, SM Stella Maris, SMK Perempuan Likas, SM Shan Tao and SMK Kolombong.
