Sabah Prisons settle for joint third

27th February, 2020

By FRANCIS XAVIER

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Prisons Department failed in their title defence of the Tan Sri Murad Ahmad National Prisons Football Tournament 2020 in Kelantan over the weekend.

This time around, they had to be content with a joint third-placed finish with Melaka in the 37th edition of the tournament.

Selangor A emerged as the new champions after edging Johor 2-1 in the final.

“We lost 2-0 to the eventual champions Selangor A (Kajang Prisons) in the semi-finals,” said Sabah Prisons team manager, Addny Miky yesterday.

“They (Kajang Prisons) looked to be more energetic as they paraded young players where a majority of them played for Malaysia Prisons in the 2019 M3 League (formerly known as FAM Cup),” he added.

“Nevertheless, I’m satisfied with our performance as we still managed to make it into the semi-finals and managed to put ourselves among the top four in the tournament for four consecutive years.

On their semi-final defeat to Selangor A, he said: “It was a 50-50 game but we were punished for our defensive errors and our failure to take our chances well. So, we accept the defeat and will try to come back stronger next year.”

Addny, on behalf of the team, also expressed his gratitude to Sabah Prisons Department Director, Datuk Hj Suria Hj Idris as well as Sabah Prisons Institutions head for their support.

Addny said among the objectives of the tournament was to select players to represent Malaysia Prisons at the Maksak 2020 football tournament that will be held in Selangor from March 18-22.

“The list of the selected players will be announced soon,” he said.

Malaysia Director-General of Prisons, Dato Seri Zulkifli Omar presented the prizes to the winners during a closing ceremony cum dinner on Sunday.
