Road left to rot

19th March, 2010

A new contractor might be asked to maintain the Sinar Jaya road at Bukit Garam in Kinabatangan which villagers claim impassable.

A spokesman from the main contractor of the road project told Actionline that they would contact the contractor concerned to complete the road maintenance job.

“If the contractor can’t be reached we’ll appoint another to finish the job,” he said.

He said this when asked to respond to a complaint from villagers of Kg Tanjung Bulat who claimed that there had been no maintenance on the road for many years.

Their spokesman, B, said villagers had to deal with uneven stretches and potholes and blamed these for causing damage to their cars.

He also claimed that the road would be impassable after being hit with floods, one of which happened recently.

“After the recent flood that hit our village last month, the muddy stretches rendered impassable to vehicles,” he said.

He acknowledged however that the contractor did seal the road some years ago but it did not last long because its “workers did not use machines.”

He said they had seen heaps of stones being placed by the road shoulders suggesting that maintenance work would be done.

“But since the flood, no one seems to be doing anything,” he said.
