Don’t rent out licences to foreigners

14th March, 2010

KOTA KINABALU: Local traders have been reminded not to engage in ownership transfer or rental of their licences to operate stalls to foreigners just to make a fast buck.

According to Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Lajim Ukin, the licences were issued to local traders by the government in the hope that their small businesses would help them earn a living.

“Foreigners can work at the stalls but don’t ever transfer the business ownership to them,” he said during the West Coast Bumiputera Traders annual general meeting held at Kompleks Tabung Haji yesterday.

Lajim lamented that stalls in Chow Kit and Masjid India at the national capital which are owned by bumiputera but have since been rented out to foreigners. He said that he did not want this to happen in Sabah.

He warned local traders that their licence to operate stalls would be revoked if they are found to have transferred its ownership or rented out to foreigners.

On the number of licences, Lajim said 1,488 including small business permits have been issued by the local authorities in the State from July 1 to December 31 last year.

In the mean time, he advised bumiputera traders to learn the ways of running a business from the Chinese who, despite having received no assistance from the government, are always committed to succeed.
