January IPI up 12.7 pct

12th March, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: The Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased by 12.7 per cent in January 2010 from the same month last year and was 2.9 per cent higher than December 2009.

The December 2009 IPI has been revised a positive 7.5 per cent year-on-year, the Statistics Department said yesterday.

“The rise in January 2010 was due to the increases in all indices,” it said in a statement.

On the manufacturing sector’s performance, the department said that output in January 2010 went up by 16.4 per cent as against January last year and was 1.9 per cent higher than the preceding month.

It attributed the higher manufacturing output to the sharp increases in electrical and electronics products (39.1 per cent), wood products, furniture, paper products and printing (38.8 per cent), and non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (24.6 per cent).

The mining sector output rose 4.1 per cent year-on-year and was up 5.1 per cent month-on-month, the department said.

The gain was mainly due to 15.2 per cent increase in the natural gas index, it said, adding that the crude oil index went down marginally by 0.4 per cent.

The electricity output went up by 19.8 per cent in January 2010 as against the same month of last year and was 2.1 per cent higher than December 2009, the department said.
