PPRT project not on complainant’s land, says DO

12th March, 2010

A villager from Kg Rosob, Pitas, is against a Hardcore Poor Housing Project he claims to be constructed on his land. He also claims that the project is obstructing access into the land.

In his complaint sent to Actionline, he urged the relevant authorities to issue a letter to the developer not to continue with the project.

“When I asked the developer, they claimed that the site was a reserved land where villagers could build houses as they like it. They also cut down 24 coconut trees on my land to make way for the project,” he alleged.

Pitas District Officer, when contacted, said the complainant’s claims had no basis as the project site was not on his property as alleged. He said in fact the proposed project had gone through the proper channels which include discussions with the relevant parties and the village head.

“We know that there are four houses which have been built near his land. But after conducting a thorough study we can confirm that the houses were outside his land,” he explained.

He also said that the complainant’s land is a government reserve.

On claims about the loss of his coconut trees, the district officer clarified that they had actually been planted by other villagers and the matter had been verified with the village headman.

“We understand his problem and that’s why only four units were built near his land so that he can still have access. As for the rest of the units we’ll decide the location later.”
