12th March, 2010
KOTA KINABALU: The good rapport between members of public and police has resulted in arrest of suspected criminals in the city.
City Police Chief ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria commended public for their cooperation to help reduce crime.
“The public plays an important role in efforts to curb crime,” Ahmad Sofi told reporters before attending a dialogue with night club operators at the city police headquarters here yesterday.
Earlier, police managed to arrest two men soon after they committed a crime.
A 30-year old foreigner with IMM 13 document was detained less then two hours after he robbed a 42-year-old local man.
“The victim who was under influence of alcohol was resting at a staircase of a shop house in Sinsuran at about 12.30am on March 6.
“The suspect approached the man and grabbed the latter’s wallet containing RM80 cash and fled the scene,” Ahmad Sofi said.
A team of criminal investigation department (CID) personnel went to the scene to investigate after being informed by members of public and they detected the suspect near a taxi stand at Centre Point at 2.15am on the same day.
“The suspect was apprehended on the spot when police found the victim’s wallet and RM80 cash with him,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Sofi said this first dialogue with some 70 night club owners in the city was aimed to monitor rampant drug abuse and other negative activities including brawls in their premises.
He said it was vital nightclub operators to work closely with police to deter unhealthy activities especially drug abuse.
“We believe several nightclubs are used as drug havens by addicts to avoid detection,” he said.
Many nightclub patrons had been detained after being tested positive for drug abuse in raids conducted by police since early this year.
“I hope with continuous cooperation from nigh club operators, their premises will be free of bad elements,” he said.
Among those present in the two-hour dialogue were senior police officers from the various units, officers in charge of police stations (OCS) and a City Hall licensing officer.
