‘YOU ARE SERVING A BIG FAMILY’

10th March, 2010

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said civil servants should accept the reality that serving the public is like serving a big family.

“There must not exist a culture and mentality that divide civil servants from the people whom we regard as customers.

“I want civil servants and the people to become one big family. The service provided must be done with commitment, similar to what we do for our own family.

“Only then, the meaning of the tagline People First can be met,” he said at the 11th public service premier gathering (Mappa XI) at Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan were also present.

The Prime Minister did not want a silo mentality in public service where civil servants limit their interest to their own department, agency and ministry.

“The work culture of a strong team must cross silos or cocoon for the people’s sake. Only then the government can deliver on the trust given.”

Najib said the four main pillars and four basic values would complement the eight prime pillars of his administration.

“InsyaAllah, by holding firmly to the eight prime pillars, we can drive civil servants, the people and nation towards our goals.

The four main pillars are 1Malaysia (People First, Performance Now), Government Transformation Programme, the New Economic Model and the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP).

The four complementary values are creative and innovative thinking, making quick decisions, value for money and integrity.
