Penampang to unveil first Bruce Lee theme hotel in the world

15th January, 2020

By PAUL MU

KOTA KINABALU: Penampang is set to take centre stage as they will have the bragging rights to claim the world’s first Bruce Lee theme hotel in the district.

The hotel is part of the RM1 billion integrated tourism development project launched by International Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Darell Leiking on Monday.

The development, known as Thema City, is located next door to ITCC shopping mall, off Penampang bypass.

The project will be developed in three phases. It will feature a 4.5-star Echarm Plus Hotel with 559 rooms and some of it will be designed with Bruce Lee theme for the guests.

The external structure of the hotel will be adorned with a giant nunchaku, the famous weapon of Bruce Lee and also a coffee lounge named the Dragon. Other features will be an indoor theme park, banquets hall, infinity pool and the tallest rooftop bar in East Malaysia.

Speaking during the launching ceremony, Darell said: “Bruce Lee’s name is such a legendary brand, the man is a global icon that wowed us with his skills; work-ethics, entertained us with his showmanship; and charmed us with his magnetic charisma.

“In two years’ time when Echarm Plus Hotel is expected to complete, I foresee it becoming one of the mainstays of tourism for Sabah.”

He believes Thema City will be one of Penampang’s many must visit locations on Sabah’s tourism map in future.

Semangat Global Group executive director, Steven Low said the world’s first Bruce Lee themed rooms will be managed by an international hotel operator chain, Dossen International, which owns over 13 hotel brands with 3,000 establishments under management and more than 30 million paid members throughout the world.

The entire developments will highlight various themes such as the D’60s, a street mall housing Kota Kinabalu’s largest food street replicating the city’s historical architectures in the 1960s and Zeni suites, a first of its kind co-living, zen themed serviced branded suites with 390 units managed by hotel operator.

Bruce Lee Club Hong Kong chairman, W Wong said this will be the first hotel in the world to receive the official licence from Bruce Lee family, featuring 150 Bruce lee themed rooms exclusively at Echarm Plus Hotel.

“I hope visitors from all over the world would get to know more about our superstar through these themed rooms so that the story of his legend will continue to spread. I believe, once the project is completed, Sabah will be a must-visit spot for millions of Bruce Lee fans throughout the world,” Wong said.

For such grand occasion, he said Bruce Lee club has specially made a replica of the original bronze statue of Bruce Lee created in 2005, which is currently placed on the avenue of stars in Hong Kong.

The replica will be placed at the establishment when the hotel is completed, he added.
