Kimanis voting will be monitored by cameras

15th January, 2020

BEAUFORT: Kimanis constituents voting on Saturday will be closely monitored by video cameras set up by the Election Commission to ensure the smooth running of the process.

The cameras will be put up at all the 68 polling streams in the 19 polling districts to ensure transparency on polling day.

EC chairman, Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun assured voters that the secrecy of the ballots would not be compromised with the setting up of the cameras.

“The cameras would not in any way compromise the secrecy of the voter’s ballot when they mark it,” he said.

According to him, the placing of the candidates’ agents will remain without change within the polling streams.

He said that the placing of the cameras in the polling streams was to record the situation in the place and was being done in accordance with procedural guidelines.

He said the recordings would also help in monitoring the situations at polling streams as well as allow EC officers to review if the process of election was carried out in accordance with the set guidelines.

“It will also be used to assist in future training and improving the election process,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Kimanis by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mohamad Alamin and Parti Warisan Sabah’s Datuk Karim Bujang. The by-election was called after an Election Court declared the May 2019 Kimanis election results null and void after it found discrepancies including unaccounted additional votes in some ballot boxes.
