SANDAKAN: An ex-convict was yesterday jailed 10 years for burning nearly 100 houses early this month, adding arson to his chequered past.

Saudin Musa, 36, who has previous convictions for molest, house-breaking and drug abuse, had torched his home before the fire spread destroying much of the squatter area at Kg Disayang Lupak Meluas, Batu Sapi on Feb 4 at about 9.30pm.

Sessions Court Judge Egusra Ali handed down the punishment after Saudin admitted to the charge under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a house.

Earlier, the court heard that Saudin was enraged when he reached home. He took a machete and locked himself up in his room before setting fire to it.

The fire started at 11pm and was only put under control by firefighters at 4.25am the following morning.

When he was nabbed on Feb 5, villagers confronted and surrounded him before he was beaten up.

Saudin suffered serious head injuries as a result of the assault.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Faisal Mohd Noor in seeking for a stiff penalty said Saudin has previous convictions for molest, house breaking and drug abuses.

“The crime he committed not only causes destruction and loss of property to his own family and neighbours but also endangered the lives of others.

“According to a report from the Fire and Rescue Department, the losses incurred by the residents were estimated at RM2.5 million. It was fortunate there were no loss of lives,” he said.

Egusra said Saudin’s actions had caused many innocent people to lose their properties.

Saudin is currently serving a 20-month jail term for two counts of threatening a woman with a machete at the village at about 9.31pm, the night of the fire.
