KUDAT: Every community must continue to remain vigilant against external threats that can undermine the peace and harmony of the country.

Pitas assemblyman Datuk Bolkiah Ismail who is also the Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said that threats could come in all forms.

“It can be from religious teachings that promote hatred and drugs,” he said in his speech at the state-level 57th Public Defence Day celebrations held here yesterday.

Bolkiah said that while the security forces and police were protecting the country and the people, the citizens must be wary of the surroundings.

“We can be the eyes and ears of the authorities as we go about our daily lives,” he said.

He said the role of public defence was important as it ensured that the country would continue to remain peaceful.

He added that public defence was a responsibility of each citizen and it would be the people to help one another in times of need.

Bolkiah also said that the government was in the final stage of implementing the Public Defence police volunteers’ programme.

“It should be introduced next year where each volunteer will assist other authorities in keeping peace,” he said.

He also welcomed the move to see up a public defence office in Pitas which is common to calamities like floods.
