KOTA KINABALU: The state archery contingent put on a valiant showing during the Johor International Archery Tournament (JIAT) held at the Dataran Bandaraya Johor Bahru on Monday.

They brought home a total of nine medals which included four gold, four silver and one bronze medal from the six-day tournament which featured 54 teams involving 338 athletes.

Lee Kin Lip was the main star for Sabah as he contributed two individual gold medals to go alongside another two more gold medals in the team event categories.

He won the Individual Men’s Compound Qualification Round, and followed it up with the Individual Men’s Compound Olympic Round before teaming up with Wong Co Wan and Mohd Haziq Din Amidin to win the Men’s Team Compound Olympic Round.

Lee then teamed up with another promising state archer, Madeleine Ong to win gold in the Mixed Team Compound as the latter also delivered two silver medals for Sabah.

She took an individual silver medal in the Individual Women’s Compound Qualification Round before joining forces with Noryfasikin Bilau and Ardina Banadus to bring home another silver medal in the Women’s Team Compound Olympic Round category.

Wong Co Wan settled for a silver medal in the Men’s Compound Qualification Round behind compatriot Lee, while the fourth silver medal was contributed by the Women’s Team Recurve Olympic Round squad of Inkacristie Stephen, Nur Soutun Naqibah Aziz and Caroline Fread.

Inkacristie managed to bring home the only bronze medal for Sabah in the Individual Women’s Recurve Qualification Round to give a respectable outing for the state contingent.

According to Sabah Archery Association (SAA) president, Ir Dzulkarnain Datuk Hj Dzulkifli, the contingent obtained an impressive result from the tournament which featured teams from across the country as well as Brunei Darussalam, Australia, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia.

“The combination of both junior and senior archers showed positive results from the tournament as our main goal was to provide sufficient exposure to the junior archers while making sure the senior athletes were able to compete at the same time.

“This is all in order to turn Sabah into one of the archery powerhouses here in Malaysia and I believe we are heading towards the right direction at the moment,” he said.

SAA sent 13 state archers to the tournament which was lacking in number as some of the Sukma Games archers were unable to take part due to the PT3 and SPM examinations.
