Sepanggar eyeing unique double

23rd September, 2019

KOTA KINABALU: Sepanggar is in for a double crown in the KDM Malaysia Football League 2018-2919 campaign. On Saturday, they stunned favourite Semporna 2-1 in the return leg of the semi-final tie in Tawau. In the first leg, they played to a one-all draw in Likas last week.

The victory saw them register a 3-2 aggregate win over their opponent and booked their place the final of the second edition of the league organised by Kadazan Murut Dusun (KDM) Malaysia with the cooperation of the Youth and Sports Ministry.

In the tie, it was the hosts Semporna that drew first blood through former Selangor PKNS captain Shahrul Azhar Ture’s 25th minute efforts.

But that was cancelled out by Paskalis Ulu Menan’s 35th minute strike as the opening half ended 1-1.

After the break, Mohd Hazrin Ismail put Sepanggar in the lead by netting home their second on the 54th minute that eventually turned out to be the winning goal.

Sepanggar assistant manager of Sepanggar Redzwan @ Garin was a relieved and a happy man at the same time following the hard-earned win.

“We are in the two finals in the competition and it was possible because of the determination and commitment from all involved with the team.

“We want to also express thank to KDM Sepanggar patron Datuk Azis Jamman for his leadership as well as team manager Haslan Rahi for his full dedication to the team,” said Redzwan, who was the team manager of KDM Papar when they won the FA Cup and finished as the league runner-up in the inaugural edition of the competition in 2014/2105.

Sepanggar will meet Telupid in the championship decider.

Telupid booked their final ticket after defeating Kudat 2-0 on aggregate. They scored an identical scoreline of 1-0 in the two legs last four encounters.

But before the date with Telupid, they (Sepanggar) will first take on Semporna again albeit that this time it will be in the final of the FA Cup competition.

For the record, a total of 32 teams from across the state took part in the league that kicked off early this year. It is offering over RM300,000 in cash prizes and in kind.
