Petronas Chemicals and Scomi to jointly develop, market chemical solutions

26th June, 2019

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas Chemicals Marketing (Labuan) Ltd (PCML) and Scomi Oiltools Sdn Bhd yesterday signed two agreements for collaboration in research, development and marketing of chemical solutions.

PCML is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) while and Scomi is wholly-owned by Scomi Energy Services Bhd (SESB).

Signing on behalf of PCML was its chief executive officer Shamsairi Ibrahim while Scomi, by Hilmy Zaini Zainal, chief executive officer of SESB.

The first agreement was to formalise the ongoing research and development (R&D) of chemical solutions mainly targeted for the oil and gas industry, which had commenced since 2016.

Meanwhile, the second agreement was for the commercialisation of a high performance water-based mud additive – the first product developed under the collaboration.

Developed at Scomi’s Global Research and Technology Centre in Shah Alam, the additive is designed to improve shale inhibition in offshore and on-shore drilling activities.

Commenting on the partnership, PCG managing director/chief executive officer Datuk Sazali Hamzah said: “This partnership is advantageous for both PCG and Scomi, as it enables us to come together in creating innovative and sustainable solutions for our customers”.

He said that at PCG, the desired outcome of product innovation was to create products for the marketplace that addressed the needs of their customers.

“This approach ensures our relevance in the industry, and our role as a market leader,” Sazali added.

SESB chief executive officer, Hilmy Zaini said they were happy to continue the collaboration with PCML to develop more newly efficient and commercially viable products, which would enhance the drilling and exploration processes.

“Our focus now is to promote the high performance water-based mud additive in both domestic and global markets,” he said.
