Sabah’s top bodybuilders to flex muscles this weekend

20th June, 2019

By FRANCIS XAVIER

KOTA KINABALU: This year’s edition of the Mr Sabah Bodybuilding and Physique Championship that will be happening at the Centre Atrium, 1Borneo Hypermall, this weekend, is expected to be an exciting affair.

Sabah Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) President Joannes Staneslous said they are expecting a good turnout with the likes of Mr Sabah’s defending champion of the champions’ winner Remy Rahim Bungkal from Sandakan among those expected to be in the fray.

“We are also expecting former champion of the champions’ winners such as Riano Engah and the veteran Henro Lee to be around as well. Mr Borneo 2018, Jauneh Leman, is also expected to take part,” said Joannes when contacted yesterday.

“So far, we have received over 80 entries. This figure is from our online registration. But we are convinced the number could reach 100 or more in the coming days,” he added.

Joannes revealed that SBBA will be using the annual event to select athletes to represent Sabah at the national level Mr Malaysia 2019 that has been slated for August 16-17.

“We will be the hosts of this year’s Mr Malaysia that will enter its 50th edition, so we will try to parade a full team since it is happening on home soil,” said Joannes.

“We will have a good look at potential athletes for bodybuilding as well as physique to be part of the state team for the Mr Malaysia.

This time, Joannes revealed they have also decided to include physique and bodybuilding for females with one category each.

“On behalf of the association, I’m calling on all bodybuilding and physique enthusiasts to come and witness the expected spectacular event that is happening at the Centre Atrium 1Borneo. We believe that all our best athletes will be in the fray,” he said.

According to Joannes, on the first day of competition (June 22), the day will start from 9am and is expected to end at 5pm.

He said registration will be conducted from 9am while the prejudging for Junior, Masters, Athletic Physique and Ms Physique will start from 10am before a lunch break at 1pm.

The event will resume with the opening ceremony at 2pm by the SBBA president, followed by the finals of Junior, Masters, Athletic Physique and Ms Physique, which is expected to start from 2.30pm.

On the final day, prejudging for the senior categories, light-flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight, light-middleweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight will start from 9am.

The prejudging is expected to end at 12 noon before the competition continues at 2pm, with the closing ceremony by Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe, followed by the finals of the senior categories.
