KOTA KINABALU: Cycology Sabah Racing Team will make their international debut this weekend. They are currently in Kaohsiung to take part in the 2019 Taiwan Cup UCI Track International Classic that will be happening from May 18-20.

“This will be the team’s first international race,” said head coach Louis Pang yesterday.

“Our goal is to gain experience at the international stage. We have gone through five months of preparations. We are in the best physical shape since Sukma 2018 and hopefully, we can do ourselves proud.

“We are putting our mental strategies to the test. As a coach, I would like to see maturity in decision making, poise under pressure and focus in execution,” Louis said.

He added that this stint is also part of their preparations for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Johor, next year. “Sabah is always preparing for Sukma. Continuous structured training … not start-stop training regimes,” he added.

Louis said Cycology Sabah Racing Team is made up of five cyclists, namely Lim Chun Kiat, 19, Bong Yong Xian, 18, Darren Chong Tshun Lok, 17, Waldron Chee, 17 and their sole female cyclist Chika Cherryca Chia, 18.

“Our men’s quartet will be the same team that won a bronze medal in Sukma in the team pursuit event,” he said referring to Lim, Chong, Waldron and Bong.

Louis said except for Lim, who will be competing in the men’s elite events, the rest of the cyclists will feature in the men’s and women’s juniors categories.

“We will participate in almost all events such as Omnium, Scratch Race, Point Race, Madison, Team Sprint, Sprint, 1km/500m time trial as well as Keirin,” he said.

But this will be one tough trip for Louis’ team as they have to pit themselves against top cyclists from more than 10 countries, including Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Macau, Indonesia, Romania and hosts Taiwan.

Cycology Sabah Racing Team is the third team from the country taking part in the race. Our national team is made up of Muhammad Khairul Nizam Rasol, Amar Danial Masri, Taib Azmudden Mohd Shukri and Fatehah Mustapa.

The other team being the Sime Darby Foundation Track comprises three cyclists namely Mohamad Shariz Efendu, Fairna Shawati Mohd Adnan and Aris Amira Rosidi.
