By FRANCIS XAVIER

KOTA KINABALU: The Federation of Seni Silat Pesaka Sabah (PSS Pesaka Sabah) are determined to make their presence felt when they make their debut at the 19th National Silat Championship 2019 that will be happening at the SUKPA Stadium, Indera Mahkota, Kuantan in Pahang on March 27-30.

Its President Datuk Haji Iliyas Ibrahim said they have set a three-gold medal target in the four-day championship. According to him, they will be pinning their hopes on 14 exponents to achieve their goals.

“We will parade eight male and six female exponents to the competition, and even though this will be our first ever appearance, we are determined to make our presence felt by eyeing three gold medals.

“We also know it is going to be tough and competitive where there will be a total of 21 teams competing, but we have prepared well and will give our best shot,” said Iliyas while thanking the Youth and Sports Ministry for their support.

“They (Youth and Sports Ministry) helped us to make this trip possible,” he added.

The eight male exponents are Mohd Zul Hakim Amir, Junazlie Pons Jimpons, Zulfa Izzat Izaan Nurdin, Melvin Joseph, Mohammad Amirrudin Adzmi, Amran Maklin, Muhammad Jazli Rafiq Mohd Rapheezal and Umar Hafiz Roslee Amir. The female athletes comprise Nurul Ain Sohrab, Nurul Syahidatul Syafiqah Masdi, Nur Syazerra Hidayah Idris, Nurul Hazifah Jederion, Nir Atikah Mustafah and Merrywati Manuil.

Nurul Ain is also one of the three coaches of the team with the other two being Emy Latip and AK Mohd Daud Sulaiman.

The state team will be led by team manager Rohaizad Ahmad.

On Sunday, Iliyas handed over the state flag to the state team at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sepanggar. For the record, PSS Pesaka Sabah have been using UiTM Sepanggar as their training base.
